Growing up I used to play Bomb Jack a lot on my ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 home computers. The game holds a lot of great memories for me, although I can't remember if I ever played it in the arcades or not.

It seems that the game was much more popular in Europe, Asia and Australia than the US, although it was certainly around here and there.

As far as I know Bomb Jack never shipped in dedicated cabinets, I am 90% sure it was simply a conversion kit. For me this is one game that I think warrants a dedicated cab, or at least a cabaret so I thought I'd take a stab at 'restoring' a game from my childhood that seemed just as common as Paperboy or Gauntlet in my memory.

Initial Mockup Idea

My original idea was to use something like a Centipede cabaret cab as the base for the project, but I may just scratch build a cab to my own design. I really want this project to look period correct.

Artwork

I scavenged various bits of artwork together from around the web, but was only able to find the CPO in vector format, the rest I had to recreate in Adobe Illustrator.

Marquee (Redrawn in Vectors)

Instruction Card

Bezel??? I still need to get a scan of the original bezel art

Hardware

Big thanks to Kalan for contacting me and letting me know he found a Bomb Jack PCB in his recent monster haul. Untested but has paperwork and looks in good shape.

If I decide to scratch build a cab, I want it to sit at the corner of my bar and follow the exact height of the bar surface.

Here's my first go at making a very utilitarian and simple design that comes up to the exact bar height in my arcade room. The cab would be no wider than 18"

V2. A more refined profile and the inclusion of an optional top piece of glass for a counter surface.

Also I really want to try and include some modular aspects to this design so that someone could make multiples and arrange them in different ways to create various usable bartop surfaces. This is kind of an 'IKEA' version of my Barrel of Kong design from a few years back.

A little more art progress...

Vector redraw of the marquee complete

Also found this generic Tehkan Bezel which I will go with if I can't get my hands on reference for a dedicated one...

Picked up this cool Suzuki Ent. cab from NintendoGuy who lives pretty close to me. Currently has a Ladybug installed which I will remove to replace with Bomb Jack.

Finished the CPO to match the control panel of the project cab. I had to rejig this a little from the original layout to make it look like it was designed to go on this control panel rather than just a generic layout with random buttons drilled into it. I fired this art off to Rich to get it printed with the velvet textured CPO material.

The kit side art was a pretty boring small panel

Due to the shape of this cabinet if I just stuck with that side panel then it would be very low down on the cab and look pretty crap. So I took the original art, redrew a chunk of it and now i'm trying to add to the design to make it look more suited to this cabinet.

Reduced the art size a little so it sits more comfortably within the profile of the cab sides. I'm happy with this so I'm calling these done and ready for print.

here is my concept for a Translite to go in the large black area above the monitor on my cab. Back lit with LED strips to keep the profile very low...

Did some CSI style 'enhance' in Photoshop to pull as much detail and color as possible

The flipped it, scaled it and traced over using elements and colors from all the other art pieces I have so far...

Also, no way of knowing but the box under the screen opening may be backing up something else. It's hard to tell if it's Yellow or white from the image we have to go off, but either way it could be the color for the Tehkan logo.

Also adjusted some of the line spacing under the sphinx and a few other bits and pieces...

Because we are only looking at the rear of the screen printing process there is a strong chance that this could be happening on the front...

I am pretty sure there must be instructions under the main window. Also I'm thinking those other blocks are backing colors to chevrons or stripes of some kind.

Did some more cleanup work...

Spoke with Fizgig today he said he is going to try and dig his out, peel the protective paper and take some photos for me which would be a lifesaver.
